What does iT4C do?

  • iT4C promotes volunteering to the IT sector and IT professionals = a national database of volunteers.
  • iT4C writes concise project definitions to help the initial search for a volunteer
  • iT4C provides resources to help manage an IT project/IT volunteer
  • iT4C provides specialist advice and guidance

How was iT4C founded?

The idea for iT4Communities came out of WCIT's charitable programme which had already demonstrated the value of expert IT advice to charities. Research commissioned by John Fisher of Citizens Online also showed that, whilst the IT sector as a whole was positive about community involvement, many companies weren't sure how to get started or how to do this effectively.

At the same time, Gail Bradbrook (then working at Business in the Community) was piloting a day dedicated to IT volunteering projects, MAD 4 IT, which received wide support from IT companies and professionals.

The time was right for the iT4Communities initiative to take shape - with the unwitting support of Costa Coffee and Cafe Nero, who hosted many of the early discussions between David Edwards (then Operations Director of WCIT), Gail and John.

David Jefferson (Council member of Intellect) and Geoff McMullen and David Morris (then President and a Vice President of the BCS) greeted the project with enthusiasm and, with the invaluable support of Roger Graham and Mike Warburg of the WCIT and Jean Irvine (BCS/WCIT), iT4Communities was launched.

To all these people who freely gave their time and skills - many thanks.

How much does it cost?

  • It is free.
  • iT4C volunteers give their skills on a pro bono (free) basis because they wish to be able to support charities and community/voluntary organisations.
  • iT4C is a funded charity and does not charge for its volunteer matching service, advice or resources (or for anything else!)
  • Please note: as with all projects you will need to set aside your time to support the project and answer volunteers’ questions. You may also need a budget for essential equipment (depends on the project/what you already have).
