iT4C was interested to see that earlier this month Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly proposed 'Britain Day' that could be a new bank holiday.
One of the purposes of this was to promote and reward volunteering.
Incentives were discussed including volunteers building up ‘credits’ in volunteer hours to pay off their student loans.
iT4C is very happy when there is any recognition of the valuable contribution of volunteering but speaking personally I would not need the incentive of payment in kind.
I first started volunteering when I was 15 and have been very lucky to have had many happy volunteering hours since then. I have gained valuable experiences along the way. I would certainly not be as happily employed as I am today without those opportunities behind me. Not only have they made a valuable contribution to my CV but they have made me much better at my job. I have met a huge number and variety of people that has opened my eyes and taught me valuable transferable skills.
At iT4C we would like to hear about your experiences of volunteering, what you enjoy, what you don’t, what you have learnt along the way. We would like to feature these stories on our website (anonymously if you like) so if you feel inspired please send us your experiences via email to: info@iT4Communities.org.uk with the subject ‘Why I Volunteer’.
