What some of the funny squiggles mean

It used to be so easy to use punctuation marks – but now these can have different meanings in different contexts of modern communications!

Putting a combination of punctuation marks together gives you different meanings and sometimes are replaced by small graphic images. Here is a brief list to get you started. (Not to be used in formal business communications by the way)

:-|             ambivalent
o:-)            angelic
>:-(            angry
|-I             asleep
\-o             bored
:()             can't stop talking
:*)             clowning
:'              crying
:'-)            crying with joy
:'-(            crying sadly
:-9             delicious, yummy
:->             devilish
:-6             exhausted, wiped out
:(              frown  *see smile for other frowns using ( instead of )
\~/             full glass
\_/             glass empty
