From One Volunteer to Another

    • “Helping an old lady across the street”
    • “Seeing the pleasure on the faces of family on Christmas morning as they open your gifts to them”
    • “Giving up your seat on public transport to a ‘very’ pregnant lady”.

What do all these have in common?

It is the pleasure of doing something nice to help someone and make them happy while you bask in the glow of their appreciation and approval.  I firmly believe that this approval releases happy hormones similar to those released during exercise.  It is good for your heart!

There are thousands of charities in the UK many of which are minute in size and are run by volunteers only.  They, like any other organisation, need technology to function and so they need IT volunteers.

This is the reason I volunteer, because it makes me feel good to help and be needed.  However, there are other reasons too, such as:

§         Expanding your network of professional and social contacts;

§         Being headhunted for your next job based on a professional job as a volunteer;

§         Opportunities to socialise and meet your future partner;

§         Foster a sense of community and togetherness by working with a group for the
          good of the community.

§         Learn new skills and expand your CV.
