Strategy for e-working, Remote

Description

This organisation is a recently launched professional body concerned with all aspects of regulation and licensing. Examples include markets and football stadiums. A key aim of the organisation is to provide information to the public. They are a membership organisation currently working within England and Wales but planning to expand into the rest of the UK and further a field. The organisation has been working informally for a couple of years but is now working to put systems and procedures in place. One of the things they'd like to consider is how e-communication, e-participation and e-administration can work for them. They plan to have a couple of office based staff with others working remotely. They would also like to communicate effectively with their members through their website. Their existing website doesn't meet their needs and they would like to re-launch it with a new design, interactive features and a structure they can maintain themselves. Initially the organisation would like a volunteer to work with them to put together a strategy for their IT needs and to define a number of projects which can be offered to other volunteers. This is a remote opportunity but the chief executive of the organisation is happy to travel throughout the UK for an initial face-to-face meeting.

Website - Simple/CMS - London NW6

Description

This charity runs training and drop in advice sessions for Ethiopians and BME groups in North London. These popular services which assist people to access education and employment needs a volunteer to help them build a website to advertise their services and give their community online access to their information. It is a small charity that would require a website that will be easy to update on a regular basis but they have no funds and they would like it to be built with a free CMS for these reasons. They have a clear idea for the look and feel and have the content ready but they do need advice and guidance about a domain name and hosting deal.

Support for youth club PCs, LB of Hammersmith & Fulham, W14

Description

This charity is a youth club operating in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. They are open for a couple of hours every Thursday evening and usually have between 15 and 20 young people attending. They have a number of sporting facilities for the youngsters - table tennis, pool, basketball, 5-a-side football - and a small canteen. They also have a computer room with 3 PCs where young people can access the Internet, send and receive e-mails, do their homework, etc. Often these young people do not have computer access at home. The charity is looking for a volunteer who can do a general health check on their PCs and provide some advice on their set up. The young people are quite smart and occasionally manage to bypass the NetNanny software. The charity would appreciate help to tighten the security on the PCs. If possible they would like the volunteer to visit the centre on a regular basis, perhaps once a month, to check the PCs and help the young people with any problems they have. Previous experience of working with youngsters is not necessary but the volunteer should have an interest in working with young people aged 8 to 16 and from diverse backgrounds. The volunteer would need to undergo a CRB check.

Members-only website, burn to CD, North West, Manchester, M32

Description

This charity works throughout the Greater Manchester region to provide support services to people with autism and their families. They provide a wide range of services including support groups, newsletters, drop-in sessions and one-to-one support. Through leisure activities they support people in improving their social skills and can also help young adults moving into employment. One of the services the charity provides is a "Parent Resource Pack". This is currently a printed document that rapidly becomes out of date. The charity would like to make this available in an electronic format in two different ways: firstly a password protected area of a website and secondly on CD-ROM in a web based format. The charity would like to be able to maintain and update the information online and through an administration interface choose to burn the site to CD or to print the entire contents for posting to members without Internet access. The members-only access would be on a domain linked from their existing website and authorised members would be able to view and print any of the pages. The charity are currently ensuring that they have an electronic version of each page in the pack but need help from a volunteer in setting up the website. They have some ideas about how the site should be designed but would welcome any suggestions from the volunteer on this and also the technologies they will need to allow them to maintain the site in the future.

Description

This advice bureau that offers independent advice to the community of Crawley, and which can only run with volunteer support to deliver all aspects of this important service, would like a volunteer for advice about options for an intranet and help in building it. This organisation has over 60 staff and volunteers who all work at different times. Information sharing can be very difficult and waste paper. They would like to talk to someone who has experience of designing and managing an intranet. As an organisation they have a well managed technical environment and commitment to making the best use of technology. If they decide that an Intranet will offer the solution they are looking for then they would need help to build it in a way that they could update easily in-house. Creative (e.g. wikis), but ultimately manageable and sustainable ideas welcomed! Website

Quick Project - Printer & Audit - South West, Poole, BH15

Description

This small organisation has one computer and printer that they rely on for their mental health service users forum. They have one member of staff (self confessed technically underskilled & overworked) who is battling with the equipment. HP Deskjet 710C printer is not printing correctly and pages fade to nothing (cartridge change did not help). This is their immediate problem. Advice in person or over the telephone would be welcomed. They would also much benefit from someone who could give them simple maintenance overview, and a basic audit and recommendations advice.
