Despite the fact that FOSS seems to align well with the ethics, needs and budgets of many VCS groups, its uptake does not currently reflect this. The Open Source Project@NCC is addressing this by delivering focused, bespoke FOSS training to Circuit Riders in every region. It is hoped that this will enable more organisations to choose whether or not they wish to use FOSS.
The Open Source Project's goal is to nurture 12 Circuit Riders in each region so that they can help organisations by using FOSS. The training recognises that Circuit Riders have very little time. The training is designed to fill the gaps that are missing from system administrators skills, whilst building on what they do know. This means that we only teach what is necessary and make best use of the time available.
The training is designed specifically for Window Administrators working in the VCS. It will involve three stages, pre-residential, residential, post residential. The goal of pre-residential training is to make sure that everyone is at roughly the same level when they arrive. Furthermore it will give attendees the time to read and digest the implications of the philosophy and ethics of FOSS. This part of the VLE is open to the public.
The two day course will cost £100 and will include food and a 5Gb USB drive.
Each day we will cover 6 courses, with a possibility of one extra one in the evening of the first day. Hotel accommodation for early booking attendees may be provided. There will be a social event in the evening.
The post-residential is hoped to provide some sort of continuing support community.
The courses are organised in a modular manner. This means that the course is robust in its ability to be re-configured easily to cope with different audiences. What is important is that everyone attending a course is at roughly the same level.
