Volunteer Point of View

Perseverance is the Key!

This month we have had feedback from a volunteer who had trouble making contact with a charity.

There was a case of a volunteer who could not establish contact. After numerous attempts he got back to us that he was giving up as a result. On follow up it turns out that the contact person had been away for about 3 weeks, hence the non contactable situation. This charity is still in need of your support. As it is, it means that the charity has to wait again until another volunteer expresses an interest in their project.

I know it can be frustrating when you repeatedly call charities to offer your services for free and no one has the courtesy to get back in touch with you. Please do not despair or give up. I am aware that the sector and its ways of working are quite foreign to most of you. However, do bear in mind that some charities are manned 100% by volunteers whose time is just as unpredictable as your own. This means that the office may not have regular hours and telephone messages are picked up randomly. (Wouldn't it be nice if they could all use email? - with your help I am sure we will get there!). Most charities lead a hand-to-mouth existence due to inadequate funding, which is why your service is crucial to the sector. Therefore please be patient and do not give up easily. If you have tried several times but not got through please contact us.

To share your thoughts of this and anything else please contact us via email info@iT4Communities.org.uk
