Projects of the Month

If you would like to volunteer for any of these Projects of the Month. You must be logged on as  a volunteer to get to these projects via the links below.

East Midlands Training Project of the Month

P1352 Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.

This charity that helps disabled and disadvantaged people by providing free computer access and computer training, would like a volunteer to help train the users. The skill set they are preferably looking for are advanced skills including CAD, Web Design and Word Processing. They would like a volunteer who could provide 2-hour training sessions on a one to one basis. This project would suit a volunteer who is able to train and support disabled users.

Northern Ireland Website Project of the Month

P1462 Newtown Abbey, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

The charity would prefer a local volunteer to work with them but if there are no local volunteers forthcoming they're happy to work with someone remotely.

This charity is a residents' association representing an estate of around 500 homes. They work to represent the residents in issues such as roads, planning and policing. The association has been awarded a grant to restore and rebuild a late Georgian house within the area. Once restored the building will be available for community use and have disabled access to all parts of the building. The charity has registered two domain names - one for the house and the other for the residents' association. They have a basic website on each but would like to start again to develop two user-friendly sites to allow them to publicise their work and the progress of the restoration. They would like the sites to be similar to show the connection between them but each should have its own identity. They are open to suggestions for the design of the sites. They would like to be able to maintain the sites themselves in the future so this is probably a candidate for a CMS.

Surrey Project of the Month

P1468 Epsom, Surrey, South East England

This charity works with churches, schools and other groups to promote accessibility for people with all types of disability. They advise on the physical requirements to make buildings suitable for access but also work to educate people on the best way to interact with people with disabilities. The charity uses an Access database to store basic contact details of their supporters. This database was set up by an enthusiastic amateur and was too complicated with many features they didn't use. A disabled volunteer has spent some time improving and simplifying the database and has upgraded it to use Access 2003. He has now reached the limit of his current abilities. The charity would like some further small improvements to the database including some reports. They would like a volunteer to help them with this.If possible they would like the new volunteer to work with the existing volunteer so that he can extend his knowledge and retain his involvement in the project. This is a project for a volunteer with an understanding of Access 2003 who is willing to pass on their skills whilst working on the project.

Quick Remote Website Projects of the Month

P1464 Buckinghamshire.

This support organisation for women affected by sexual abuse have a professionally built and simple website that needs minor changes made to keep the information up to date. They have designed their website to require minimal maintenance as they do not have the resources to update it in-house but it needs occasional attention, in this instance, the changing of a link and some minor text changes. This is a very quick volunteer project for someone happy to make these minor amendments. The organisation has all the ftp details etc ready for a smooth update process.

Quick Technical Support Project of the Month

P1465 Paignton, Devon.

This advocacy service working with people with learning disabilities has a simple 5 PC peer to peer network running either Windows 2000 or XP machines. They require volunteer technical support to re-network a PC that was replaced (by an upgrade) but now needs to be brought back into service. This is a quick project that will require either just the setting up of the one machine or assistance with the sourcing of necessary additional cable and equipment and then the installation of the PC.

Quick London Website Project of the Month

P1472 Wood Green, London N22.

This voluntary organisation specialises in providing supported accommodation to people of 16 years and above; care leavers and vulnerable adults with support needs helping them to establish their independence. They have developed their own website but have reached the point that they require a web design volunteer who will be able to add the professional touch. The content and structure is in place, they have a few more photos and would like an online form but nothing more complicated than that. It is important that the ability to be able to update the necessary areas is retained by the organisation. This would be a quick project for a volunteer who would like to like to transform this website with a simple new design without major reworking.

Another Quick Remote Website Project of the Month

P1478 Gloucestershire

This cancer research charity does not command the funding of some of the bigger charities in this field but works hard to support this important area of research. They need a volunteer to assist them with a review of their website to ensure that it is the best resource it can be to support their organisations aims and limited resources. The website needs a review of the way it is maintained (and the options for the staff to be able to update), by the way that it is promoted (a review of search engine optimisation) and a general overview of whether it does reflect the organisation’s aims and objectives. The report made by the volunteer will inform the Trustees choices for the next phase of website development. This would be a quick project for an experienced web designer who could give recommendations and advice to this team.

Scottish Website Project of the Month

P1433 North Berwick, East Lothian, Scotland

This Scottish non-denominational church would like a volunteer who could help the charity configure and test a new web site.

The charity already has the content for the site in front page format, however they would like the content to be embedded into a clear and concise design. Once the design is complete they envisage managing the system for themselves, in order to add and change events etc. This project would suit a volunteer who could create the site for the charity and then advise on setting up a domain and web hosting.
