Web accessibility
Looking for a layman's guide to web accessibility?
Our friends at Futurate have made available a white paper called Web accessibility for web managers: part 1. The paper is intended to introduce some of the key points around web accessibility and it's aimed at a non-technical reader who needs to understand the issues, but not the specific technicalities of the area.
You may find that the paper will be useful when you're working with charities on developing or improving websites. Alternatively if this is an area you don't have experience of the paper could be a good place to start.
Developers with more experience in this area may already have used Wave 4.0 - a free web accessibility tool provided by WebAIM. A Firefox toolbar version of the WAVE tool has now been released so you can check pages for accessibility while viewing them in FireFox. We've been using the toolbar on the iT4Communities website and so far we've found no major problems.
