The positive effects of volunteering

A recent survey reported by Third Sector has found that employers believe that volunteering can help young people develop their careers. The survey, by youth volunteering charity v, found that 87% of employers thought that volunteering could have a positive effect on young people's career progression. However, they did emphasise that relevant experience was most important.

We know that you volunteer for many reasons. Last summer one of our regular volunteers, Yewande Olowokere, told us that she volunteers because it makes her feel good to help other people. She also suggested some other reasons to volunteer:

  • Expanding your network of professional and social contacts;
  • Being head-hunted for your next job based on a professional job as a volunteer;
  • Opportunities to socialise and meet your future partner;
  • Foster a sense of community and togetherness by working with a group for the good of the community.
  • Learn new skills and expand your CV.

iT4C recently signed-up its 5000th volunteer, Anthony Smout. Anthony offered his services "in order to help others benefit from his 10 years' experience in the IT sector". He won an engraved iPod for being the milestone volunteer but said "Although the iPod is a fantastic surprise, being able to help others using my IT skills will no doubt be even more rewarding!"

If volunteering has helped improve your CV and got you a pay rise or a new job we'd love to hear about it. Perhaps your story could inspire others. E-mail us with your story and we'll feature you in a future newsletter.
