Opportunity Name: Advise on structure of public information website
Skill Type: Website
Region: London
Locality: City of London
Postcode: EC4M
Virtual: Yes

Description: This charity is a member association aiming to make the law work for a better environment. In partnership with a university they are in the process of developing a website to make information available to the general public. Whether someone has a problem with a noisy neighbour or is concerned about a major development nearby the site will provide basic legal information and provide pointers to sources of help. They are working with a IT consultant to develop a CMS-based site. However, none of the parties involved has experience of presenting information to the public. They have found some guidelines but are not sure how much they apply in their case. They are looking for a volunteer who can advise on the best way to structure the site and present information. Users may visit the site very infrequently and from public-access computers so it needs to be very easy to find the information they require. Much of the site development is already complete and there's a beta version you'll be able to look at. However, there's still a lot of flexibility in the design and structure of the site. The charity feel that you'd need to spend at least half a day taking an initial look at the site. Further work would depend on how good or bad you feel the site is. They are also planning to get user groups involved in testing the site so you may wish to be involved in that. There is quite a tight timetable for this as the site is due for launch in January 2009. They're happy to work remotely with a volunteer.

They have a network of trainers working with schools and education authorities across the UK. Although a very small organisation they are active in the international arena and their director is an expert in this area. They have a website but are embarrassed by it. It is unattractive and crucially it is not accessible. They would like a volunteer to work with them to design and build a new attractive, accessible site. They need to be able to maintain the site themselves so a CMS would be appropriate and they'll need training in how to use it. They would like to use the site to promote the wide range of publications they have for sale. This could simply be a page with appropriate information but they would be interested in considering an e-commerce element to the site. However, they would need you to explain the pros and cons of on-line payments before going ahead with this. The most important part of this is making the site accessible so if you're an expert in this area please get in touch.

They have a huge, internationally important collection that is available to students, lecturers, media, etc. and provides a resource to oppose anti-Semitism and other forms of prejudice. The library has identified a need for an e-strategy. They want to consider issues such as digitisation of the collection, digital collecting, using the web to make the collection available to a wider audience and development of navigational tools to assist users. The library has no staff with an IT background so they are looking for a volunteer to help them with this. Ideally the volunteer should have experience of library, museum or educational organisations but anyone with knowledge of e-strategy would be very welcome. The charity aims to put together a plan for the future that will allow them to implement the strategy as a number of small projects and to make appropriate bids for funding. Charity staff will be happy to carry out much of the legwork and research if a volunteer can point them in the right direction. They imagine that they'd only need to meet with the volunteer every couple of months.

Opportunity Name: Further development of online systems - anywhere in London or SW
Skill Type: Programming
Region: South West
Locality: Bridport
Postcode: DT6
Virtual: No

Description: This organisation is a Dorset-based social enterprise which aims to provide locally sourced good quality food. Currently they work with a dozen local primary schools cooking meals in their kitchen and delivering hot food daily to 500 children. They also work with food clubs to enable individuals to benefit from the discounts available due to their bulk buying. During the seven years they've been running they've developed two PHP and MySQL based systems. One system allows schools to place orders for meals, these are mapped to recipes and the quantities required are calculated; the second system handles the purchasing of food. They are now planning for the future and would like to make some improvements to the two systems. For ease of development they'd like to move to a web application framework and are considering Ruby on Rails or Symfony. They would like to develop APIs to interface the two systems and also to allow local suppliers to upload availability information. They would also like to develop the web interface to allow parents to order and pay for their child's meals online. They are looking for a volunteer who can help develop these systems - some specification work has already been done. There could be a significant amount of work involved but feel free to enquire if you'd like to help with part of it. Ultimately they feel that this software could be of interest to other similar organisations and they are considering offering it to the open source community at some stage. The organisation's staff regularly travel to London and within the south west and are happy to meet and work with a volunteer anywhere in that region.

Their frames-based website provides contact with others via a confidential contact area, a discussion forum (both using ASP) and regular newsletters, and offers books, CDs, with payment through PayPal using very simple HTML, but they feel it is not visible in search engine results. It uses Access databases, ASP, CDONTS for email and possibly PERL as well. This is an opportunity for a volunteer who is familiar with Horizon or similar systems and has a background in analysis of systems activity including Tivoli log files. The organisation does not need a campaigner in this role - this is a strictly professional engagement providing support to a campaigning group. The files are in paper form so a local volunteer would be preferred although it would be possible to scan and transmit them to a remote volunteer

Opportunity Name: Help with CSS [This is a short task]
Skill Type: Website
Region: Scotland
Locality: Galashiels
Postcode: TD1
Virtual: Yes

Description: This long-established but small charity based in Galashiels helps people research their ancestry in south-east Scotland. As part of their work, they record gravestone inscriptions in cemeteries in their area and publish them, as well as publishing books on social history. They have a Windows- based website with .ASP pages and very simple design. They would like your help with the CSS so that a right-hand column can be defined for some pages, to show sponsors' names and Google ads. A lot of the content is displayed in tables, and they would like your help to get the table data rendered by the CSS instead of using HTML code.

Opportunity Name: Install CMS and Other Improvements
Skill Type: Website
Region: Scotland
Locality:
Postcode: td1
Virtual: No

Description: This charity based in Galashiels supports people with disabilities to manage their own care, by supporting them as employers, helping with recruitment, and managing carers. They have a frames-based website which they can't update, built for them by a friend. They would like you to install a CMS, and train them how to use it so that they can add and change text and images, and add new pages. They would also like an online application form built. Finally, it would be nice for the site to be more accessible, especially considering their target audience. Most of the work can be done remotely.
