DU's Silver Surfers' Day (SSD) on May 15th
If you're involved with a current volunteer project or not, or whether employed with an organisation or not, you might be interested in becoming part of Silver Surfers' Day this year.
Look out for plenty of SSD volunteering opportunities coming soon to our RSS feed.
You can volunteer at any level: from holding an event in your grandparents' sitting room teaching them to email, to galvanising the mega-corporation employer to holding IT taster events nationwide for local older people. The in-between levels are up to you:
- Footie fans can ask their football club to host a Silver Surfers' Event for older fans
You could be a 'tutor for a day' at your local library, museum, computer shop, supermarket, internet cafe, and teach the DU's excellent beginners' learning resources.
- You can also spread the word to the charitable organisations you work with so they can put on their own event, perhaps with your help.
Resources to help ANY organisation to invite older people in on SSD for a good first taste of IT are currently in production at DU headquarters. May 15th is a long way off but you can get involved right now to make sure you receive notice of these FREE resources.
Please add your email address to the e-zine distribution list (right hand column).
DU is also keen to hear stories from iT4Communities volunteers about their work in the community so if you want to be a guest blogger, please email gill.adams@digitalunite.net.
Do IT for Older People - DU Workshop in Sheffield, 12th March
Do you want your company to help with longer-term activities around getting local older people online?
There are 8 - 10 million older people currently 'missing' from the UK's digital scene. Digital Unite is running a workshop on 12th March in Sheffield to empower and inspire people to help their older community become intrigued and fascinated by what IT can do for them. It will also help them stay engaged and develop into active users in the digital scene.
It's a great day for thinking, strategising, planning for sustainable programmes and projects, with the help of experts in the field and colleagues who may potentially become partners.
Attendance costs £75 for one person or £120 for two people from one organisation.
The workshop will be held at Ukonline Centres HQ at The Quadrant, Sheffield, S9 4WG from 10am-4.30pm. More details here: tinyurl.com/http-digitalunite-com-wshop or email gill.adams@digitalunite.net directly.
