Opportunity Name: Advice on choice of contact management system
Skill Type: Consultancy
Region: London
Locality: Camden
Postcode: WC1V
Virtual: YesDescription: This London-based charity helps people needing legal advice throughout England and Wales. They match people in need with a volunteer from their large panel of barristers who can advise on their particular case. They have a large number of contacts to manage and they would like help from a volunteer to choose a suitable system. They have a small team based in the same office and all will need access to the information. They will need to categorise contact information and extract subsets of the data. They have some ideas of their requirements and have considered add-ins to Outlook or to Excel. However, they really need some professional advice on the options available to them so that they can choose the right package for their needs. If possible, they'd like you to help install their chosen software. If not, iT4C can look for another volunteer to help with that part of the project.
Opportunity Name: Simple contacts database on Apple Mac
Skill Type: Database
Region: London
Locality: London
Postcode: W4
Virtual: NoDescription: Although only a year old this charity is already working with a number of projects throughout the developing world. They set up and support community music projects for some of the most deprived children by providing funding for instruments, music stands, books, teacher training, etc. They aim to use both local traditional and classical music to help young people learn life skills such as teamwork and leadership and generally build their confidence. They have a small UK-based team of volunteers who need help to share and manage their contacts. They all use Apple Macs and have tried to set up a contacts database using the software that came pre-installed on the Mac - they're not sure what this is called and it may simply be an address book tool rather than a true database. However, they've not been able to share the data. They don't want to do anything sophisticated - they want to store contact information and categorise it according to a set of pre-defined categories; they'd like to flag the people who receive their e-newsletter and export that subset to the online newsletter software they use at createsend.com. Three people need to share the information - the Macs aren't networked - so they'll need to ensure that the data is synchronised. Ideally this is an opportunity for a volunteer with Mac experience but anyone who knows about databases and is prepared to experiment a little could probably help.
Opportunity Name: Find and Help Implement Customer Relationship Management System
Skill Type: Consultancy
Region: East Midlands
Locality: Leicester
Postcode: le1
Virtual: YesDescription: This charity based in Leicester receives surplus goods from businesses, and distributes them to charities, for example, clothing to homeless shelters, goods to women's hostels, containers of clothes, medical supplies, blankets, toys abroad. They have a network of 5 PCs running XP and MS Office. They're looking for someone to review their needs, and identify a suitable (low-cost or open source) CRM (Customer Relationship Management) solution, that will maintain information on their clients, donors, beneficiaries and funders, and help them expand their services. Although they're based in Leicester and currently have less than 300 clients and donors, they're expecting to expand rapidly in the next 2 years. They want you then to work with them to implement it and train a couple of staff. Their offices are not wheelchair-accessible.
Opportunity Name: Simple website
Skill Type: Website
Region: North West
Locality: St Helens
Postcode: WA10
Virtual: NoDescription: This advice centre requires a volunteer who is able to provide a simple and easy to update website to provide information about their service. This is hopefully part of a larger project where the centre can receive online referrals from partner organisations, this is to be provided by an independent piece of award winning software developed by another iT4C volunteer. The website update would suit a volunteer who is able to help the organisation define their requirements and produce a simple, easy to up date website possibly using a CMS.
Opportunity Name: IT Tutor for Small Group in Community Centre [This is a short task]
Skill Type: Training
Region: Wales
Locality: Bridgend
Postcode: CF32
Virtual: NoDescription: This community centre near Bridgend in Wales, soon to be a registered charity, hosts community events & local youth groups, and is used as a training venue for community based training. They have a suite of 10 networked PCs running XP, MS Office, and Photoshop Elements. They're looking for someone to spend 2 to 4 hours a week at a mutually convenient time supporting users of the suite with basic/general use of the computers. The community users don't want to attend 'courses' or get involved in formal training - they just want to know how to do things like selling on Ebay, using email, sending pictures, or using Facebook.
