Locality:
Postcode: BN1

Description: This Brighton based Charity provides information and support to the lesbian, gay, trans-gender, bisexual and transsexual community of Brighton and Hove via a range of services. They need to know about housekeeping, backup, and security, and an assessment of their current/future IT needs. An audit, simple documentation about the configuration and housekeeping tasks, and a recommendations document would be the first step. If you would like to be a Trustee of this organisation you would need to personally identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or trans-gender however all enquiries welcome for a one off audit/short term support thank you.

Opportunity Name: Strategy and planning for craft charity
Skill Type: Strategy
Region: South East
Locality: Surrey
Postcode: KT8
Virtual: No

Description: This charity aims to encourage and promote the art of embroidery. They provide workshops, educational resources and a library. They maintain a museum of historical needlecraft artefacts and publish two bi-monthly magazines. The charity needs to review their entire IT systems and they would like a volunteer to work with them to put together an IT strategy and a plan for the medium term future. They know that they will need to replace their server within the next twelve months and the supplier of their CRM software is encouraging them to upgrade to the latest version. But what else should they be considering? They have a network of about a dozen PCs running Windows XP. As well as the standard Office applications they have a number of database packages, Sage accounts, an EPOS system and software to manage the museum stock. They also support their website in-house. They would like a volunteer to look at current system, talk with them about their requirements and help them put together a realistic plan for their IT systems.

Opportunity Name: Occasional support for CRM system
Skill Type: Database
Region: South East
Locality: Surrey
Postcode: KT8
Virtual: Yes

Description: This charity aims to encourage and promote the art of embroidery. They provide workshops, educational resources and a library. They maintain a museum of historical needlecraft artefacts and publish two bi-monthly magazines. The charity use the ProgressCRM contact management database to manage details of their members and the magazine subscriptions. They have a standard installation of the system and they don't use all of the modules available. However, it is an old version of the software - version 3.65. The smooth operation of the database is vital to the organisation - it stores details of over 10,000 members. The charity would like a volunteer they can call on for ad hoc support for the database. They rarely have problems but they'd love to have someone they could talk to if something goes wrong. In addition, they will need to replace their server sometime in the next twelve months and when that happens they would like the volunteer to speak with their external IT support people to ensure the database is transferred smoothly. They're happy to work remotely with a volunteer who has previous experience of this software.

Opportunity Name: New Website Including Content Management System
Skill Type: Website
Region: South West
Locality: Wrington
Postcode: BS40
Virtual: Yes

Description: This new charitable organisation (on the way to becoming a registered charity) based near Bristol helps individuals and their communities to mend the gap between cultures, religions, generations and people of different wealth for current and future generations. They implement programmes in Kenya, Uganda and the UK, all of which are in their early stages of preparation and implementation. They need a website to provide information about the organisation, and to document progress on projects in progress. They expect to gain volunteers through the website to support the charity, to work on projects in Africa, or to work for the charity in the UK, so they want you to create a web application form; they'll also need a contact form. They have some thoughts about the design and the content, but you'll need to explore that further. They need to be able to keep the website up to date, so they want you to implement a suitable content management system, and train them how to add new pages, and add text and pictures. They want to have statistics on visitors. They need guidance about hosting, though this might already have been arranged. They also want you to implement domain email, and you'll need to show them how to add mailboxes. It's not part of this project, but at a later date they want to be able to have online donations, and to sell Xmas cards and crafts, possibly taking payment by PayPal. Although the charity is based near Bristol, the contact works in Central London during the week, and could meet you after work.

Opportunity Name: website for older people's digital inclusion project
Skill Type: Website
Region: East of England
Locality: Leigh on Sea
Postcode: SS9
Virtual: Yes

Description: This project is slightly unusual as you will be volunteering with a computer support company who are supporting a large national charity in a project to help older people in London have access to refurbished computers. This small company offers their support on an entirely pro bono basis however and need additional volunteer support as the project has grown. This project is part of their commitment to improve digital inclusion and they have the support of the minister of digital inclusion. Your role will be to bring web specialist skills which their small team lacks. Their team refurbishes the donated computers and produce documentation to help older people make use of them. They have identified the need for ongoing support and encouragement that could be provided online using peer to peer support via an online forum. The skills you will need are an enthusiasm for helping older people access computers and the internet and good accessibility/interactive design skills with a knowledge of forums and other social networking options.
