IT volunteer gives £500 of support and relief from computer stress
Phoenix is a youth centre that provides a range of activities and events for about 1000 young people aged 10 - 25, including volunteering opportunities and the chance to get involved with a range of community projects.
Badly behaved computers
The computers essential to the running of this Youth Centre were a cause of considerable stress to the organisers. They couldn't share files and a lack of backup meant no protection against a computer failure.
iT4Communities - a light in the dark
Katie Jones of Phoenix says "I was really pleased by how well organised iT4Communities was, we got a response quickly with someone phoning back to ask more questions within a couple of days, and a few days after that Viv replied to the advert."
Help close at hand
Viv Mair, iT4Communities volunteer, works near to the Centre and was able to ask her company (DHL) to donate the server to network the computers. Being so near she is also able to continue to provide support.
Viv really enjoyed working with the Phoenix team. She said, "I'm glad I have the opportunity to work with Katie at the Phoenix Centre. The centre does a lot of good work for young people in the area & Katie works endlessly to provide the services she does. If I can help them with their IT in anyway then it's the least I could do. I am pleased that the money they save can be used elsewhere in the project".
Phoenix from the ashes
Without Viv, Phoenix staff would have just continued to struggle but their computers are no longer a problem!
Viv has joined in with other aspects of their work too and has given IT careers advice to a young man who attends the club.
"It would have cost us a lot of money if we had had to pay a private company for the time and expertise she has given us. It has been an absolute joy to meet Viv and it's wonderful that she wants to continue to help us in the future!" says Katie Jones
