Don't underestimate your skills

In the job market you know that you need to keep your skills up-to-date. There's often a lot of pressure to get up and running on a project with little or no training.

It may not be quite the same when you're volunteering. True, you're not likely to get any training but there should be less pressure to get the job finished quickly - although that doesn't mean it can take forever.

And, in many cases, the charity doesn't need the most cutting-edge solution. In fact, that could cause problems with maintenance and support.

So if you think your skills are a bit rusty, don't worry, there are lots of organisations that would still benefit from your help. If you see an opportunity that you're interested in, but don't have all the skills required, why not contact the organisation anyway? They may be happy for you take your time on the project so that you can bring your skills up-to-date at the same time, or perhaps they can compromise on some of the functionality they need.

Alternatively drop us a line before you contact the charity and we'll let you know if we think you'll be able to help.
