Skill Type: Website
Region: London
Locality: Surrey
Postcode: KT8
Virtual: NoDescription: This long established charity based near Hampton Court station teaches, practises and promotes the art of hand embroidery to the highest standards, within both historical and contemporary design contexts. They run day classes in a range of hand embroidery techniques, and certificated courses, they undertake textile restoration and carry out new commissions to produce income. Although their current website is maintained using a content management system, some aspects like regularly changing banner images, can't be done by them. They want their shop to be more tightly integrated with their website, and they would like to produce e-newsletters easily using a modifiable template. They would like you to produce a requirements specification for a replacement website with a different design, and content management system that would enable them to do all the changes they want. They would also like the online class booking to integrate with their class management database, THANKQ providing it can be done securely; and possibly to integrate Sage with the e-commerce functions. They want you to produce the requirements specification, suggest and discuss options, but also to advise them what is feasible but impractical, or likely to be expensive, and to use your knowledge of the marketplace and technologies so that their expectations are realistic. All their requirements will need to be agreed by their trustees, and they will then use the specification either to seek a commercial developer or to seek a volunteer.

Opportunity Name: Advise on structure of public information website
Skill Type: Website
Region: London
Locality: City of London
Postcode: EC4M
Virtual: YesDescription: This charity is a member association aiming to make the law work for a better environment. In partnership with a university they are in the process of developing a website to make information available to the general public. Whether someone has a problem with a noisy neighbour or is concerned about a major development nearby the site will provide basic legal information and provide pointers to sources of help. They are working with a IT consultant to develop a CMS-based site. However, none of the parties involved has experience of presenting information to the public. They have found some guidelines but are not sure how much they apply in their case. They are looking for a volunteer who can advise on the best way to structure the site and present information. Users may visit the site very infrequently and from public-access computers so it needs to be very easy to find the information they require. Much of the site development is already complete and there's a beta version you'll be able to look at. However, there's still a lot of flexibility in the design and structure of the site. The charity feel that you'd need to spend at least half a day taking an initial look at the site. Further work would depend on how good or bad you feel the site is. They are also planning to get user groups involved in testing the site so you may wish to be involved in that. There is quite a tight timetable for this as the site is due for launch in January 2009. They're happy to work remotely with a volunteer.

They have a network of 10 PCs running XP and Office 2007, and they use Adobe Audition and Premiere for the editing. The network is totally isolated from the prison network and there is no internet access. The person who currently supports the network is leaving soon, so they're looking for a local volunteer who would be available to come in and rectify problems when they occur and also to train staff to solve simple problems and do simple maintenance tasks. You'll need to undergo a CRB check. Please note there is no wheelchair access.
