Opportunity Name: Mentor and Make Improvements to Ning-based Website
Skill Type: Website
Region: London
Locality: London
Postcode: W9
Virtual: NoDescription: Here's an exciting and unusual opportunity, and a bit of a challenge, that will certainly look good on your CV. This charity based near Queen's Park tube station works to achieve positive change in London's most deprived neighbourhoods. Their mission is to design and deliver innovative, sustainable programmes that enable individuals and communities to fulfil their potential through learning, employment and enterprise. They offer a careers advice service run by young volunteers aged 16 to 25. They have 2 other offices in Marylebone and Maida Vale. Each office has networked PCs running XP and MS Office, and the offices are connected by a WAN. They've set up a website using Ning. They need you to mentor them to show them how to configure Ning, administer the "modules", how to develop the website, and how to change the CSS, to make it more user-friendly, and how to set up groups and sub-groups. The young volunteers are in on Thursdays and Fridays during the day. They're hoping you're a Ning guru, with good CSS, and an eye for design. They've built a few templates, but they need to be easier for users to use, to upload their work experiences.
Opportunity Name: Overhaul Website and Implement CMS
Skill Type: Website
Region: London
Locality: London
Postcode: E2
Virtual: NoDescription: This community centre based near Shoreditch and Liverpool St tube stations provides a range of services to the local community including a pre-school Under 5s Project, youth work, advice sessions, a women's project, and pensioners' clubs. They have a rudimentary web site, which they would like to expand and make more user-friendly. They can't commit a lot of time to updating the site so they need something that is easy to update - a simple CMS (content management system) would be good - and they don't want to make the site too large and complicated. They haven't got a deadline for this and are quite happy for a volunteer to take their time over it as long as they know something is happening.
Opportunity Name: Implement CMS and Redesign Website
Skill Type: Website
Region: London
Locality: London
Postcode: SE5
Virtual: NoDescription: This charity based near Oval tube station provides information, advice and guidance to disabled people. They promote independent living, influence decision and policy makers so that their client group can become active members of the community that they live in. They also offer training in ESOL, basic and intermediate skills in literacy, numeracy, and IT to both disabled and able people. They would like you to redesign their website, they're discussing with each other what they want. They want to be able to update the website themselves, so they want you to implement a content management system, and train them so that they can add and change text, and images, and add new pages. As their client group is disabled, accessibility is very important. They also want you to ensure that the website is xhtml compliant by validating it.

Skill Type: Technical Support

They have 3 PCs running XP. One of the PCs is partially disassembled. They have information on the hard drive which they would like you to recover, and then they would like you to re-assemble the PC. They're not taking backup at the moment, although they now realise its importance. They would like you to devise a backup strategy, and train them to operate it.
Opportunity Name: Medium term plans for innovative arts organisation
Skill Type: Strategy
Region: London
Locality: London
Postcode: SE1
Virtual: NoDescription: This arts organisation brings together professionals, volunteers and students from a range of disciplines to create innovative projects. They encourage inter-generational projects and provide opportunities for work experience and volunteering. Projects must result in public performances and participants are encouraged to take the show on tour. They worked with a consultant from lasa who has identified a need for them to approach their ICT in a more strategic manner. They are looking for a volunteer to help them put together strategic plans for the next five years which will ultimately enable them to use IT more efficiently. The plans should identify priority areas to work on, define manageable projects and enable them to seek funding for particular areas. They have already identified a number of areas of interest - communication within projects, security, managing their equipment (much of which is loaned by other organisations) and making a vast archive of materials available via the internet. An initial document written by the lasa consultant will be available. Volunteers must be familiar with Apple Operating Systems.
