A pro bono service

What does pro bono mean?

Volunteers working through iT4Communities must offer a pro bono service. That means they donate their time and skills to a charity or voluntary organisation entirely free of charge.

It is acceptable for a volunteer to::

  • Ask if the organisation is able to cover reasonable travel expenses to visit their offices - please agree it in advance and note that not all organisations will be able to pay
  • Accept refreshments offered by the organisation
  • Advise the organisation about where to purchase IT equipment and software - even ordering it on their behalf

Note that the charity will have paid iT4Communities a small administration fee towards the project definition process and support provided by the iT4Communities team.

For more information see our Terms and Conditions

It is not acceptable for a volunteer to:

  • Accept any payment for the work carried out for the organisation
  • Request any payment for work to be carried out
  • Advise the organisation to use goods or services provided by you or a third party from which you will benefit financially

The most important thing is that our listed charities, who are looking for volunteers, are not offered a paid-for service.

If you wish to provide paid-for services to charities then you should request a listing in the ICT Hub Suppliers Directory.

If you need any advice on whether you can charge for services please contact us for advice.
